The purpose of the Veterans Affairs Office is to explain to the veteran their rights to their eligibility under the G. I. Bill of Rights. The office assists veterans and their dependents in securing evidence and preparing necessary forms for approval of the Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office. The Service Officer and staff coordinate military funerals, make funeral home visits, home and hospital visits, business and school visits and nursing home visits to assist veterans and their families on all VA matters. They work with the Federal and State Service Officers, Service Organizations and Community Service Clubs in Veterans matters. A quarterly report is forwarded to the Blount County Commission for all transactions performed in the office.
The office assists veterans and dependents of veterans who are in need of assistance such as counseling and advice, funds, medical treatment, loaning of available medical equipment, educational benefits, burial benefits, assistance in filing necessary forms all in compliance with congressional federal law regulating VA. Many of our clientele are fully dependent on VA for their survival especially for funds on which to live. There are many problems with keeping a smooth dispensation of these funds, therefore the Veteran’s Office acts as mediator.
Currently there are 11,493 veterans in Blount County with at least half of these and their dependents being served by the local Veterans Affairs office. VA expenditures for benefits in Blount County during 2003/2004 was $18,542,000.00 as reported by the Tennessee Commissioner of Veterans Affairs offices in Nashville (derived from the figures supplied from the US Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office, a federal department). The local Veterans Affairs office is largely responsible for these benefits. Many retired military are served as well, separate from the VA.
Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
